Soomer in recovery mode after crash cuts short impressive EWC debut
Hannes Soomer is already on the road to recovery following his aborted FIM Endurance World Cup debut in the 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans last month. The 26-year-old from Estonia was a late addition to the Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team line-up having initially being recruited as BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team’s reserve rider for the EWC season opener.Despite showing plenty of promise, Soomer’s race ended when he suffered a shoulder injury during a crash in the early hours of Sunday morning. “First of all I am more or less okay after my crash,” he wrote on Facebook. “We were leading the Superstock class for most of the race until I had a big crash in the middle of my third stint due to a very unlucky technical problem that we could not foresee. The team could repair the bike and continue to race until the morning but had to retire with another technical problem. Thanks to my team-mates Kenny Foray, Loïc Arbell and Jan Bühn for welcoming me to the team. It’s a big shame we couldn’t finish what we started.”Of its retirement from the 24 Heures Motos, a post from the French Tecmas team read: “After a night of climbing back to the top of the ranking, our team made the difficult decision to abandon the event due to a technical issue. It's a tough hit, but we’re determined to come back stronger than ever. We are thirsty for revenge more than ever. Team spirit and passion are the engines that drove us this weekend. We give our full support to our rider Hannes Soomer injured during this race.”Photo: Facebook.com/soomer38

Why 28 was great for Team Bolliger Switzerland in EWC
Team Bolliger Switzerland began its 2023 FIM Endurance World Championship campaign with sixth place among the Formula EWC entrants in seventh overall and 28 points after smart pit work and a fine display from its three riders, including rookie racer Alex Toledo, in the 24 Heures Motos last month.A new addition to the Team Bolliger Switzerland ranks for 2024, Toledo shrugged off his absence of experience of racing in the EWC and at night to perform a fine substitute role in place of Marcel Brenner, who was unable to race at Le Mans due to a clashing commitment in the FIM Superbike World Championship.“It’s totally different for me,” said the 22-year-old Spaniard, who partnered Portugal’s Pedro Romero and Austrian Nico Thöni in Kevin Bolliger’s Kawasaki-powered line-up. “Last year I did Moto2 races but I never did an endurance race so this was my first time and I never ride at 300kph in the dark before. My objective was to keep the level of the team as the substitute of Marcel. I enjoyed a lot and we had some great moments.”

Pit-Lane’s EWC potential unfilled, next stop Spa
Pit-Lane Endurance’s potential in the FIM Endurance World Cup went unfilled during the 24 Heures Motos when a mechanical failure forced its premature exit from the Le Mans season opener. With riders Enzo Boulom, Alessandro Delbianco, Luca De Vleeschauwer and Eemeli Lahti onboard the #86 Dunlop-equipped Yamaha, the French team had high hopes of success in the Superstock category. But after an overheating problem struck on Saturday evening, several lengthy pitstops dropped the team out of contention before its retirement was confirmed shortly after midnight.A statement from the outfit read: “After a thorough analysis of the situation and considering the safety of all riders, we made the difficult but responsible decision to end our participation in this event. Despite the exceptional efforts of our team and the valuable support of YART we deemed it would be reckless to continue considering the risks involved.“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone for their dedication and support throughout this ordeal. Your commitment and professionalism was exemplary. We are aware this decision may be disappointing, but the safety of our pilots remains our top priority.”Pit-Lane Endurance will be back on track when Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps hosts round two of the EWC season, the 8 Hours of Spa Motos, from 6-8 June.

Rea makes emotional return to EWC after serious injury
Gino Rea described his return to racing for the first time since he suffered serious injuries in a crash practicing for the Suzuka 8 Hours in August 2022 as both “surreal” and “positive”.The British rider, 34, formed part of Wójcik Racing Team’s Superstock line-up in the 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans last month following an arduous period of recovery and rehabilitation. Although his heroic comeback ended in frustration due to a technical issue forcing the Polish squad to retire its FIM Endurance World Cup points-chasing entry, Rea said his return was proof that his talent is firmly intact, despite his lengthy lay-off from racing.“In general it’s positive because I felt good, the head was good and my riding was good and my pace was okay,” Rea said following his first stint aboard Wójcik’s Dunlop-equipped Honda. “Unfortunately, I crashed on the first lap, it was totally unexpected, I had a problem with my brakes. I was trying to adjust it on every corner but I didn’t quite get the feeling. I went to brake, but I had no brake and down I went.”

New lap records, big points and an apology as YART begins EWC title defence
Yamalube YART Yamaha EWC Official Team completed the FIM Endurance World Championship season-opening 24 Heures Motos with two new lap records, a healthy haul of 52 points but a major sense of unfinished business. What was shaping up to be the perfect start to YART’s EWC title defence ended as a case of what might have been after a crash shortly before the 16-hour mark. The Austria-based outfit set new lap records in qualifying and the race – thanks to the heroics of Niccolò Canepa – and led comfortably until Karel Hanika’s uncharacteristic error in cold conditions dropped it back to third place behind winner Yoshimura SERT Motul and runner-up BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team.Hanika injured his shoulder when he fell and the decision was taken for his team-mates Canepa and Marvin Fritz to complete the race as a pair. Nevertheless, YART left Le Mans just nine points adrift of Suzuki-powered Yoshimura SERT Motul “First of all, I would like to apologise to the whole team for my mistake,” Czech Hanika said. “It was a costly one, to be honest, because we were comfortably in the lead. I still don’t really know what happened. We will have to analyse the data, but I take the blame myself anyway. I will work on this to improve for the future, as I am not happy with my performance over the entire weekend. Hats off to Niccolò and Marvin, who were able to finish the race together for the last eight hours. I was a bit battered and bruised and had some pain in my left shoulder, so we decided not to stress it anymore. They did an amazing job; they were there to win it and were the fastest on track over the whole weekend. It is great to have teammates like that. I promise to do my best to reach their level and sorry again to the team, as they deserved this win, but I will come back stronger.”
